Shelley Sperling lived in Mahopac, New York, which is approximately 45 minutes away from Marist College in Poughkeepsie, New York. Shelley was 1974 graduate of Mahopac High School. While in High School, Shelley participated in the Concert Orchestra, Drama Club and she was a National Merit Semi-Finalist.

In the Fall of 1974, Shelley entered Marist College as an Honors Student. She was part of a special three-year program at the school, that is no longer in existence. It is said that Shelley was a quiet girl who focused on her school work, but also had many friends at the college.
